About the Speaker:

"Prof. Perry Shum (Ping Shen) is a Chair Professor in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), serving as Associate Director for Research. He is an Academic Committee Member/Chief Scientist at the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Optical Fiber and Cable Manufacturing and Application Technology, Director of the Guangdong Key Laboratory of Integrated Photonics, and a National High-Level Talent.

He is a Fellow of The Optical Society (OSA), SPIE, IEEE, Chinese Optical Society, and Chinese Society of Optical Engineering, and currently serves as the 37th President of the IEEE Photonics Society.

Prof. Shum has published over 500 SCI papers with more than 20,000 citations and an H-index of 70. He has been listed in Stanford University’s “Top 2% Global Scientists” and other Lifetime Scientific Influence Rankings. He has led national and provincial research projects with total funding exceeding 50 million RMB. Previously, he served as Director of the Network Technology Research Centre (NTRC), Photonics Research Centre (PhRC), Centre for Optical Fibre Technology (COFT), and Dean at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

He has chaired and organized numerous international conferences, including the 12th Asia-Pacific Laser & Optoelectronics Summit (2017), 22nd Optical Communications Summit, 5th Global Photonics Congress (CLEO-PR|OECC|PGC 2017), ACP 2022, and OGC 2023. His supervised PhD students and postdocs include recipients of 2 National Young Talents, 1 National Distinguished Young Expert, and 3 National Excellent Young Scholars. He maintains close collaborations with universities and research institutes worldwide.

Research interests: Biomedical photonics and clinical applications, specialty fibers and sensing technologies, lasers, and silicon photonics.
