Recently, Advanced Materials (IF=27.4) published a research article of Guoxing Zheng’s research group of Electronic Information School. This work achieves complete decoupling of amplitude and phase manipulation for the first time which enabled multifunctional metasurface device with zero crosstalk and high information density.
The article is entitled “From Lingering to Rift: Metasurface Decoupling for Near- and Far-Field Functionalization”. The first author is Jiaxin Li, a 2020 doctoral student of the Electronic Information School. Prof. Guoxing Zheng of the Electronic Information School, Prof. Shaohua Yu of the Wuhan Research Institute of Posts & Telecommunications and Prof. Cheng-Wei Qiu of the National University of Singapore are the co-corresponding authors. Prof. Yiqun Wang and Dr. Chen Chen performed the fabrication of the sample.
This work focuses on the hotspot direction “near- and far-field functionality multiplexing and decoupling” of metasurfaces and new research is conducted. By subtly combining Malus’s Law with geometric phase and propagation phase, near-field amplitude manipulation and far-field phase manipulation can be completely decoupled, which eliminates the interaction between near- and far-field functionalities of multifunctional meta-devices and realizes a meta-device with high information density and zero crosstalk. The research group designed and experimentally demonstrated a multifunctional metalens as an example, which shows great potential of metamaterials. In working mode 1: the imaging and focusing functionality shows no difference with ordinary metalens. In working mode 2: a nanoprinting image with resolution of 63500DIP (about 1/150 of human hair’s diameter) appears on the metalens plane.
